A miracle after her death

Women are characterized by their marvelous strength despite how hard the adversities can be. Marta's story is one of them. When she found out that she was pregnant while she was diagnosed with an illness she received news that she never expected. Life is life, and we can’t change how things happened, but why do these small big changes come about when we least expect them?
Marta Solís Agüero. She is 50 years old, and she was born an October 7th of 1970 in San Marcos de Tarrazú. She grow up with 6 siblings. When she was in the school and high school she worked harvesting coffee, raising pigs and other animals with his family. Also, she collected strawberries and flowers in El Empalme. Once she walked for almost two hours with her sister María to work, because was so early that they could not get someone to arrive them there. Her siblings including her, they had to work because her family economy wasn’t enough to buy them things like books for the studies or things like a bike.
When she grew up she started college studies to be an industry designer, but she had to leave it. That because Marta had to take care of her mother, who underwent an operation and needed to rest. Also, the economy and the travel to study was tangled, and that make it harder to continue. After all, Marta got married and started to study Education in UNED University to be a school teacher, which has now been her profession for almost 30 years. She decided to study that because was her childhood dream job. She loves to teach new generations no matter how difficult it could be she always try to do her best.
She got married with Alberto when she has 22 years old, and then they have three beautiful daughters; Melania, Salomé, and Mariana. They have been living in Santa María de Dota for almost 15 years. Her two first daughters already finished their studies and they are working, one in medicine and the other in business. Mariana is in high school finishing her studies. She’s more special for Marta, since she arrived when her sister María del Carmen (also called Kika) passed away. Marta said; “I don't have any favorite daughters, but Mariana is more special. She has been with me for the last 15 years and we are more than just a couple of inseparable friends.”
María del Carmen died 15 years ago in August 18th of 2005, at 37 years old. She had cancer in the bone marrow and died for a weird disease that doctors couldn’t explain. She made the family stick together in some way when all her brothers and sister started to develop their lives away from home. She was loved by every person that met her, was recognized for her generosity and kindness in the community. She was a retired nun, she studied education and was a really good athlete in her childhood.
Her sickness began at 33 years old with a diagnosis of bone marrow transplant, which gave her 5 more wonderful years of life. She was going to be Mariana’s Godmother, and was the first person that Marta told about her pregnancy. Marta said, “Kika was so happy that she almost cried. She said me ‘That baby would come to fill a void’, but I never expect that was going to be her void”. Marta told that Kika was going to organize the baby shower, so she went personally to deliver all the invitations. House by house, saying goodbye without knowing it. Mariana’s baby shower was cancelled eight day before, because Kika had a relapse required hospitalization. Marta said; “Everything got complicated, and the last day that I heard her voice was the Mother’s Day. Three days after, she died in the hospital. “
Kika was Marta’s big sister, her confident and motivator. “We were all looking for her, she helped everyone that she could. She helped me and motivated me to start and finish my studies as teacher. She loved all her nephews, and she cared for Melania and Salomé. I miss her so much.” After her death, Marta had to undergo a procedure with radio therapy which left her very exhausted, but despite that she managed to have her daughter safe and sound. Her baby born almost an exact month after the Kika’s death.
That baby was born on September 19, 2005.
The writer of this article is that baby. I’m Mariana. I’m 15 years old and I’m in high school. This article was an assignment, but I didn’t see it like that. I’m grateful because this gave me the opportunity to learn more about my birth, my family and some stories behind my mom.
